In addition to pure maple syrup, you will find barrel-aged and infused syrups, hickory syrup, birch syrup, black walnut syrup and certified organic syrup. Yummy sweetness! I love the Sea Salt Maple Syrup and maple sugar candy! And, of course, there will be plenty of syrup to purchase and take home with you!

Did you know that pure maple syrup is fat free, contains iron, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and has a higher calcium content of milk? Additionally, maple syrup contains amino acids, proteins and vitamins B2,B5 and niacin. With only 40 calories per tablespoon, as a sweetener, maple syrup has fewer calories than honey (45), white sugar (55) and corn sugar (60).

In 1900, one year before the original Homestead Resort burned down, a small Victorian house was built on State Hwy 800 (now known as Hwy 220) by the Southern Improvement Company. It was initially offered as a leased property, and the 1st tenant was J. T. McAllister who was a local attorney, historian and author. The house was named Vine Cottage and the entire front porch was covered by ivy vines which provided privacy and shade. In 1905, the Inn became a boarding house and started to rent out rooms to travelers who were looking to “take the waters” of the hot and warm mineral springs in the area.
In 1928, the house underwent a major expansion that doubled the size of the inn and added 6 additional rooms at the back of the property and allowed for a much larger kitchen so they could serve 3 meals a day to their guests. In 1930, Thomas Sterrett Jr. and his wife Margaret (Daisy) Pole purchased the Vine Cottage and turned it into the inn as it is known today. The Sterrett’s operated the Inn until the mid 1940’s. Their daughter, Helen Sterrett and her husband Reginald Muzzy continued to operate the inn with their two children after the death of Helen’s parents. Helen Muzzy sold the Vine Cottage Inn in 1955. Helen’s daughter, Elizabeth (Beth)  lived in the Inn for 9 years before it was sold in 1955. As of 2022, Beth still comes to visit her childhood home at least once per year! We love to hear her stories of growing up in Vine Cottage and Bath County. Historical pictures are courtesy of the Bath County Historical Society.
From 1955 – 2018, nine different owners have operated the Vine Cottage Inn as a welcome retreat for those travelers looking to enjoy Bath County. In 2018, the Vine was purchased by Dave and Tammy Hahn.
Meet the Innkeepers:
Tammy and Dave are resident Innkeepers at Vine Cottage Inn and are thrilled to have the opportunity to continue the long history of exceptional hospitality for which the Vine is known.
Between the two of them, Dave and Tammy have over 60 years of hospitality experience, both from the hotel and the restaurant perspectives. Dave started in the restaurant business in 1983 and has spent 39 years in various positions including server, assistant manager, general manager, and Managing Partner. Prior to purchasing the Inn, Dave spent almost 19 years with Outback Steakhouse in positions from Server to Managing Partner.
Tammy graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management in 1992. Her career in the hotel industry began in 1989 as a front desk clerk and ended in 2009 as a General Manager of a 181 unit condominium hotel. Prior to purchasing the Inn, Tammy managed a before and after school program at a local elementary school for about 100 children for 9 years. Her hospitality skills assisted her in excelling in this role.
Dave loves to cook, so he will typically be found in the kitchen from which he will prepare your 3 course breakfast on our 1928 Magic Chef commercial stove. Since Tammy burns water, she is not allowed in the kitchen to help cook. However, she will serve your delicious breakfast with a hope and a prayer that you won’t be wearing it when she’s finished. Together, they both enjoy the challenges of maintaining historic properties so do not be surprised if you find both of them with tools in their hands.
While they have not owned the Vine Cottage Inn for long, they have already made upgrades to the 8 of the 10 guestrooms and public areas with more to come in the near future. Both Tammy and Dave have knowledge of the area and can assist you with planning a day trip or recommendations for dinner. They are looking forward to meeting all their guests and demonstrating the exemplary guest service in which they excel.

Since the mid 1700’s visitors have been drawn to Bath County in the mountains of Virginia. Considered part of the Alleghany Highlands, Bath County is one of the most beautiful places in the USA. The area offers rich wildlife, scenic views and natural mineral springs. Hot Springs continues to be a popular destination today, and Vine Cottage Inn is honored to welcome you to the area.
When was the last time you visited an area without a single traffic light? That is right – There are no traffic lights in the entire county. It is the perfect location to visit, relax and let the stress of your everyday life float away – perhaps on one of the many water features in the county.
No matter what you are interested in, Bath County has something for you! Guests to the area can hike, bike, fish, observe wildlife, hunt, shop, eat great food at one of our wonderful restaurants, visit Bacova Beer Company for local microbrews, or listen to world class chamber music.
More than 60% of the County of Bath is contained in the George Washington National Forest.  Running through the forest is the Jackson River. Completed in 1979, Gathright Dam holds back the waters of the Jackson River to create Lake Moomaw. Bolar Mountain Recreation Area is a great way for visitors to enjoy the lake. The area provides boating, fishing, hiking, swimming, picnic area, volleyball and a playground.

Warm Springs Pools

The Warm Springs Pools (formerly the Jefferson Pools), owned and operated by the Omni Homestead Resort, recently completed a $4 million renovation and re-opened to the public in December 2022. The Warm Springs Pools are unique – they maintain a constant flow and temperature year-round of 96-98 degrees Fahrenheit and a flow of approximately 1,700,000 gallons of water per day. The thermal waters have been known for centuries for their curative qualities.
A 50-minute soak in the pools will cost $35 – $40 and is open 7 days a week from 9 am – 6 pm. Family time will be from 9 am to 1 pm, adult co-ed soaking time (ages 16 and up) will be from 9 am – 3 pm & 5 pm  – 6 pm, and gender specific (18 and up) in appropriate pools will be from 4 – 5 pm daily. Garth Newel Music Center

One of the hidden gems in Bath County is the Garth Newel Music Center. Just 4 miles from Vine Cottage, Garth Newel is a year-round chamber music venue presenting over 50 concerts per year. Established in 1973, Garth Newel draws world renowned artists in addition to its own Piano Quartet. The intimate setting creates an amazing, unique ambiance and allows for personal interaction with the musicians. Enjoy the concert on its own, or pair it with a gourmet meal created by the resident chef. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind experience.


Activities

Golf
Two championship golf courses are within 4 miles from the Inn and are part of the Omni Homestead Resort. The Cascades is where Sam Snead earned recognition. The Old Course, originally designed in 1892, is home to America’s oldest tee in continual use. Both courses offer challenging play and breathtaking scenery.
Horseback Riding
Let’s Ride Horses – Offering private trail rides that last for an hour or all day, Let’s Ride Horses provides a unique way to experience the beauty of Bath County.
Their horses are trained to accommodate all riders from beginner to advanced. Located just 15 minutes from the Inn.
Omni Homestead Resort
The Omni Homestead Resort is a world-class resort and located just a block from our Inn.  When you stay with us, you can enjoy paid use of many of their activities such as zip lines, falconry, skeet/trap shooting, Cascades Gorge River hike, Virginia Wine Experience, fly fishing, mini-golf, tennis, tomahawk throwing, skiing/ice skating and various other activities depending on the season.
Spa/Massage Services 
Bath County has several options for spa/massage services. Stone Mountain Massage offers therapeutic massage and reflexology and is located within a 5-minute walk from the Inn.  Warm Spirit Spa is located 5 miles from the Inn and provides a variety of services including therapeutic massage, facials, skin care, and Ayurvedic body treatments. Depending on availability, Vine guests can also inquire about a day pass for the Spa at the Omni Homestead although resort guests do receive 1st priority.


Outdoor Recreation

Alleghany Outdoors 
Looking to rent Kayaks, tubes, rafts or bikes? Alleghany Outdoors in Covington rents them all.  Whether you are looking for a short trip down the Class I and Class II rapids on the Jackson River, or want to spend most of the day, they can assist with equipment and shuttle service so you can relax and enjoy the beauty of the Jackson River Valley. Bike the 13-mile Jackson River Scenic trail, ride the river, or do both; a variety of packages await.
Bolar Mountain/Lake Moomaw Recreation Area 
Lake Moomaw is created by the Gathright Dam on the Jackson River. This 2530-acre lake has 43 miles of undeveloped shoreline and crystal clear water. Guests can hike, boat, fish, swim, picnic and camp in the area. The recreation area has over 11 miles of hiking trails.
Douthat State Park 
Rated as one of the top 10 state parks in the US, Douthat State Park offers a variety of outdoor activities. With 4 miles of stream fishing, a 50-acre lake with trout, bass and channel catfish, boat rentals and a sandy beach, the park calls to water recreationists. In addition, the park maintains over 43 miles of hiking, biking and bridle trails. Picnic area, an amphitheater and playgrounds round out the numerous recreational options.
Fly Fishing

Hidden Valley Recreation Area
Hidden Valley provides a variety of outdoor activities from hiking, fishing, bird watching and more.
The Jackson River Gorge is a beautiful hike along the Jackson River. Hidden Valley Bed and Breakfast is the site for the movie Somersby. Located approximately 10 miles from the Inn.
Hiking 
Over 60% of the county consists of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. Numerous trails are available for hiking and details can be found on the Bath County website  or by visiting https://www.alltrails.com/
Off-Road Adventures 
The 1,100 mile Mid-Atlantic Back Country Discovery Route runs right through Bath County.  Ride the route to get to us or plan several day trips from the Inn.


Attractions

Dan Ingalls Overlook – Located at the top of Warm Springs Mountain, the overlooks offers spectacular views to the East, along with interpretive displays which explain the historical significance of the area.
Falling Springs Waterfall – 80 foot waterfall located approximately 11 miles from the Inn.
Gathright Dam – The 1,310 foot long, 257-foot-tall earthen dam on the Jackson River which created Lake Moomaw. A visitor center provides historical information about the dam and the land and villages that are now covered by the lake.
Humpback Bridge – Virginia’s oldest covered bridge, Humpback bridge was built in 1857 and crosses Dunlap Creek. Approximately 23 miles from the Inn, the bridge is part of a lovely wayside park.
Troddenvale Cidery – The only cidery in Bath County, Troddenvale is open for tours and tastings by advance reservations only.

Staunton – Approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes from the Inn, Staunton has the Woodrow Wilson Library, Camera Heritage Museum, Frontier Culture Museum, and a thriving arts and music scene.
Caverns – Grand Caverns, Fountain Cave Adventure Tours, Shenandoah Caverns, and Luray Caverns. All caverns are between 90 minutes and 2 hours from the Inn.

French Toast with Praline Sauce (New Orleans Style)
If you have extra sauce, it is great over ice cream!
Ingredients

1 1lb. loaf of day-old French Bread
4 Eggs
3 tbsp. Vanilla Extract
3 tsp. Ground Cinnamon
3 cups milk
½ Cup Butter
1 ½ Cups Brown Sugar
¾ Cup Virginia Maple Syrup
¾ Cup Whipping Cream
¾ Cup Chopped Pecans

Instructions

Mix eggs, vanilla and cinnamon in bowl and let stand for a few minutes.
Add milk and mix.
Cut bread on an angle in 1-inch wide slices. (10 to 12 slices)
Dip bread slices into the milk egg mixture (do not saturate) and place on hot grill.
Cook until brown and crisp and turn over and do the same. Turn only once.
Melt butter in a medium saucepan over low heat.
Add brown sugar and maple syrup.
When sugar has dissolved, add whipping cream.
Stir in chopped pecans. (Do not boil) 

Dave’s Homestyle Potatoes
Yield: makes 6-8 servings
Ingredients

6-8 Redskin Potatoes
½ medium Yellow Onion
Olive Oil
Simply Organic All-purpose Seasoning

Instructions

Cut potatoes into uniform ¼ inch cubes.
Heat liberal amount of Olive Oil in a Sautee pan.
Add potatoes to hot oil
Sprinkle a generous amount of All-purpose Seasoning onto potatoes.
Let sit in pan for 1 minute, then toss (or stir for those who can’t toss!)
Meanwhile, mince onion – wipe away tears with kleenex.
Cook, toss/stir potatoes until they become golden brown.
Add a little more oil, and the onions. Toss/Stir.
Turn off heat.

Vine Cottage Inn welcomes you and your family to our charming home nestled among the Virginia mountains. It is our goal to provide our guests with an outstanding experience. Please read the following policies carefully, and do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about accommodations at the inn. 
Room Availability and Reservations

Reservations can be made through our website, by calling our reservation number (540) 839-2422 between the hours of 9am and 9pm, or via email. Our availability and current rates can be found through our online reservation system.
While some weekends and special events require a two-night minimum stay, our availability and stay requirements can be found on the Inn’s calendar on our website.
Our room rates are based on single or double occupancy. Rates are subject to change without notice. A fee of $20 per person per night will be charged for any additional guests over the age of 13. Well-mannered children are always welcome at the Vine.
The Vine Cottage Inn offers a 10% discount to all active and veteran military personnel.
Rates are subject to applicable state and local lodging taxes of 9.3%.
Group blocks of 4 or more rooms may be available. Please contact the Inn directly to check availability, rates, and group room block policies.
Room rates include a full three course breakfast served in the dining room between 8 am and 9 am.


With prior notification, we are happy to accommodate any food allergies or dietary restrictions. Please let us know 48 hours prior to arrival, so we can assure you of having the freshest ingredients available.
A deposit of one-night room and tax is required when you reserve your room online. All major credit cards are accepted. The credit card transaction will be processed the day the reservation is made.
Upon arrival, your balance can be paid using an accepted credit card, traveler’s check or money order. We do not accept personal checks.

Cancellations

In the interest of good hospitality and guest relations, we understand that cancellations are sometimes unavoidable. Due to the size of our Inn, cancellations affect us significantly. Therefore, we have a strict adherence to our cancellation policy.
We require cancellations to be made 8 days or more prior to date of arrival. All cancellations are subject to a $35 cancellation fee.
There are some special events that require a 30-day cancellation or more prior to date of arrival.
If a cancellation or change to a reservation is received 7 days or less prior to the arrival date, the full amount of original reservation will be charged to the credit card on file and is non-refundable. Cancellations made prior to 7 days will receive a return of deposit, less the $35 processing fee.
Failure to cancel a reservation will result in the full amount of the original reservation billed to the credit card on file and is non-refundable.

While at Vine Cottage Inn

Check-in is between 3pm and 9pm. Early and late arrivals may wish to make advance arrangements. We will make every effort to accommodate your requested time of arrival.
Check-out is by 11am as our staff needs time to prepare the room for newly arriving guests. Parking after check-out is available on a limited basis, please make arrangements if you need to leave your car for a short time after check-out.
For the comfort and health of all, we maintain a smoke free environment. Smoking is prohibited in the Inn and on the porch. To accommodate all of our guests, a designated smoking area has been established on the property. If a guest has been smoking in the Inn, a $300 fee will be incurred to cover the costs of clean up, smoke residue removal and the cost of putting the room out of service until it can be properly cleaned.
For the safety of our guests and our historic 125-year-old inn, candles and any guest-controlled open flames are not permitted in guest rooms. This includes candles, incense, oil burners, and similar items. Items found will be held for safekeeping and returned at checkout.
We cannot allow pets due to potential allergy problems. We are happy to assist you in locating local boarding services.
Gift Certificates purchased from Vine Cottage Inn must be used within two years of the purchase dates and are neither redeemable for the cash value nor transferable.
