Our Delicious Breakfasts and Recipes

A breakfast at Hot Springs, VA’s Vine Cottage Inn is always a treat.  Starting with a cup of fresh-brewed 100% Columbian coffee beginning at 7 am, breakfast service begins at 8 am.  Tammy will serve you juice, fruit and a sweet item as soon as you are seated while Dave is preparing your meal to order.  Breakfast may consist of French Toast, Pancakes, Waffles or any number of other delicious offerings.  A portion of breakfast meat and eggs will be provided daily.  You will have different breakfast foods each day, even if your stay lasts up to a week or more.

If you need a cup of coffee earlier than 7 am, or would like an afternoon or late night cup, the Inn is equipped with a Keurig and a variety of flavors.  For those that prefer to find their caffeine in other ways, a guest fridge is stocked in the coffee room with a selection of complimentary sodas and water and is available 24/7.

Fresh Apple Pancakes with Apple Cider Sauce

Yield: makes 6-8 medium pancakes


  • 2 Cups Bisquick Mix
  • 2 Cups Milk
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 ½ Medium Granny Smith Apples (peeled and coarsely chopped)
  • ¼ Cup Sugar
  • ¼ Cup Cornstarch
  • Apple Cider as needed
  • 1 ½ Medium Granny Smith Apples (peeled and coarsely chopped)


  1. Hand-mix Bisquick, milk and eggs until batter is smooth.
  2. Add chopped apples and mix until batter is smooth.
  3. Mix sugar and cornstarch with small amount of apple cider and cook over low heat until sugar dissolves.
  4. Add apples and slowly add apple cider as needed, cook over low heat until apples are soft and sauce is proper consistency.

French Toast with Praline Sauce (New Orleans Style)

If you have extra sauce, it is great over ice cream!


  • 1 1lb. loaf of day old French Bread
  • 4 Eggs
  • 3 tbsp. Vanilla Extract
  • 3 tsp. Ground Cinnamon
  • 3 cups milk
  • ½ Cup Butter
  • 1 ½ Cups Brown Sugar
  • ¾ Cup Virginia Maple Syrup
  • ¾ Cup Whipping Cream
  • ¾ Cup Chopped Walnuts


  1. Mix eggs, vanilla and cinnamon in bowl and let stand for a few minutes.
  2. Add milk and mix.
  3. Cut bread on an angle in 1 inch wide slices. (10 to 12 slices)
  4. Dip bread slices into the milk egg mixture (do not saturate) and place on hot grill.
  5. Cook until brown and crisp and turn over and do the same. Turn only once.
  6. Melt butter in a medium saucepan over low heat.
  7. Add brown sugar and maple syrup.
  8. When sugar has dissolved, add whipping cream.
  9. Stir in chopped walnuts. (Do not boil)

Orange Pancakes with Orange Sauce

Use Orange Juice in place of milk in your favorite Pancake Recipe.


  • ½ Cup Sugar
  • 1 tbsp. Cornstarch
  • 1 ¼ Cup Orange Juice
  • 2 tsp. Butter or Margarine
  • 1 8-oz. Can Pineapple Tidbits, Drained


  1. Combine sugar and cornstarch in a small saucepan, then add the orange juice, stirring.
  2. For 2 minutes continue to cook and stir.
  3. Remove from heat.
  4. Add butter or margarine and pineapple, stirring.
  5. You may leave out the pineapple if you so desire.

Pumpkin Pancakes with Warm “Virginia” Maple Syrup


  • 4 Tbsp. Butter (melted)
  • 4 Large Eggs (Separate yolks and whites)
  • 1 Cup Pumpkin
  • 2 Cups Milk
  • 2 Cups All Purpose Flour
  • 2 tbsp. Sugar
  • 4 tsp. Baking Power
  • 1 tsp. Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. Salt


  1. Combine and mix pumpkin, egg yolks, milk and butter. Add dry ingredients. Hand mix until smooth. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
  2. Ladle batter onto a hot (400 degree) grill. Makes 8-10 medium pancakes. Turn only one time and do not pat.
  3. Serve with butter and Warm “Virginia” Maple Syrup.
  4. (If you cannot get “Virginia” Maple Syrup the other kind will work!)
